Jean-Laurent Casanova, MD, PhD

Jean-Laurent was trained as a pediatrician and immunologist and has in practice become a human geneticist studying the pathogenesis of infectious diseases. He cofounded the Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases with Laurent Abel in 2000, five years after he started his own research group at Necker. When Jean-Laurent was appointed Professor at the Rockefeller University in 2008, he and Laurent maintained their lab in Paris, while running their new lab in NY. Jean-Laurent leads his team testing the hypothesis that life-threatening diseases during primary infection can result from inborn errors of immunity. Outside of the lab, Jean-Laurent enjoys riding his bicycle, exploring the boroughs of New York City. He is also an avid mountaineer and alpinist, having climbed peaks in regions as diverse as the Alps, the Atlas, Kabardino-Balkaria, New Zealand, and Patagonia.

Laurent Abel, MD, PhD

Laurent is the Director of Research at INSERM (DRE). Since 2000, he has been co-directing the Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases (Imagine Institute, Necker campus) with Jean-Laurent Casanova. He is studying the human genetics of infectious diseases, with the goal of identifying the main human susceptibility/resistance genes controlling the response to infection by various microbes (in particular, mycobacteria and oncogenic viruses), and the development of the associated infectious diseases. He is a leading expert in genetic epidemiology of infectious diseases and has developed numerous methods in this field. Laurent is also highly knowledgeable in wine and loves to hike in the Alps.

Bertrand Boisson, PhD
Bertrand earned his 2003 PhD from UPMC in Paris, specializing in host-pathogen interaction. Following a malaria postdoc at the Pasteur Institute, he shifted to human genetics of infectious disease. Recruited as an Associate Professor in 2015 by INSERM and later as a Staff Scientist in 2022 by The Rockefeller University, his focus lies in uncovering molecular and cellular mechanisms in idiopathic children, including rare immunodeficiencies like EDA-ID, SPAD, CVID, or HIES with invasive pneumococcal and staphylococcal diseases. Beyond science, he enjoys playing and watching basketball.
Bertrand Boisson, PhD
Stéphanie Boisson-Dupuis, PhD
Stéphanie is a geneticist working in the field of primary immunodeficiencies, focusing on susceptibility to mycobacterial disease. She was appointed as group leader in 2006, to investigate the molecular and genetic basis of tuberculosis. Her group provided the proof-of-principal that TB is a genetic disorder, with monogenic rare and common genetic etiologies of TB. She likes traveling for both work and pleasure!
Stéphanie Boisson-Dupuis, PhD
Jacinta Bustamante, MD, PhD
Jacinta is a pediatrician and immunologist by training. She is an Associate Professor (with tenure) in Cellular Biology in Paris Cité University (MCU-PH). She has made outstanding contributions to the field of infectious diseases affecting the myeloid cells (Mendelian susceptibility to mycobacterial disease or MSMD, chronic granulomatous disease or CGD, Whipple’s disease). In addition to her role as MSMD group leader in the research lab, she is also responsible for the diagnosis of inborn error of innate immunity in patients attending the Center for the Study of Primary Immunodeficiencies (CEDI) at Necker Hospital for Sick Children, Paris -France. Jacinta is passionate about football. As a food lover, she enjoys experimenting with cooking and trying out new recipes for empanadas. She finds it therapeutic and a great way to de-stress.
Jacinta Bustamante, MD, PhD
Aurélie Cobat, MD, PhD
Aurélie is a research scientist at INSERM (Chargé de Recherche, CRCN). She was trained in public health, genetic epidemiology and statistical genetics. She is investigating the human genetics of infectious diseases, with the goal of identifying the main human susceptibility/resistance genes controlling the response to infection by various microbes, in particular mycobacteria and viruses. She is also developing statistical methods to improve and optimize the analysis of NGS data. Outside work, Aurélie enjoys cinema, theater, running and playing basketball with her kids.
Aurélie Cobat, MD, PhD
Emmanuelle Jouanguy, PhD
Emmanuelle holds her PhD in immunology from Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris, France) working on mycobacterial susceptibility and IFNGR1 deficiency with Jean-Laurent. After a post-doctoral training at Jules Hoffman’s lab in Strasbourg (France), on the antiviral immune response in Drosophila, she joined back the HGID lab to develop the virus team. She discovered novel inborn errors of immunity underlying herpetic encephalitis (UNC93B), NK cell deficiency (MCM4, GINS1), epidermodysplasia verruciformis due to beta-HPVs (RhOH, CIB1) and fulminant hepatitis to hepatitis A virus (IL18BP). Now her work focuses on the antiviral immune response in skin and liver. Outside of the lab, Emmanuelle volunteers for an association to assist others.
